Retro's Sta-Level is an updated version of the venerable Gates Sta-Level tube radio broadcast compression amplifier. Still based on the original 1950's all-tube design, Retro adds modern features and new adjustability for more recording studio applications possible than the original units.
The Retro Sta-Level is a true variable-mu tube compressor that uses a rare 6386 tube. This tube is a big part of the sound of popular vintage compressors like the CBS Audimax, RCA's BA-6, Gates Level-Devil, GE-Unilevel series, Collins 26U-1/2 and Fairchild's 660/670 models. The Sta-Level Gold Edition comes equipped to accept either the 6386 or another more commonly available tube that closely matches the performance of the 6386 tube. A socket is included for a user-installed 6386 tube.
A great tool for bass guitar and vocal tracking, the Sta-Level compressor is becoming popular with producers, artists and engineers because of its warm musical character and overall 'vibe'. Setup is easy with only four controls to adjust--making it perfect for 'on the fly' changes during a heated tracking session.
Modern upgrades include: three different attack times and a six-position Recovery control for six different release times. Other features include: XLR input and output connections; large gain reduction meter; a standard IEC power connector with switchable 115 or 230V power supply; an integral tube balance test; easy stereo strapping of two or more units; and selected NOS (new-old stock) tubes and components.
The Retro Sta-Level is capable of 40 dB of gain reduction with a signal-to-noise ratio of greater than 70dB and a THD (total harmonic distortion) of less than 1% at 30dB of GR. It has a near 'ruler-flat' frequency response within 0.5dB from 20-20,000Hz.
