Baby Audio Comeback Kid Delay Plug-in |
Baby Audio's Comeback Kid starts out as a mono or single delay line but then adds many more effects not usually seen on delay plug-ins. You may easily combine any of these other processors with your delay setting to get otherworldly effects across a stereo field. To get you started using Comeback there are over 60 presets put together by working engineers and producers. They come up when you click on the download button just under the Pro Tools plug-in frame.
Comeback Kid has an oversize GUI with large Time and Feedback control knobs and a digital readout. The plug-in automatically syncs to your session tempo and there are four preset timing sub-division choices: Straight, Dotted, Triplet, and Free (running). The Time knob sets the delay times as fast as 64th notes or up to 2500ms (2.5-seconds) in Free mode. Feedback controls how many repeats and you can switch on Ping-Pong repeats where the delay signal bounces back and forth, left and right.
The Comeback Kid works best as an insert on a stereo track rather than a send/receive effect because of the other onboard effects useful to build the whole sound, vibe, and tonality of an instrument or vocal.
I liked using it on an ordinary sustaining pad track in a dance mix track. I started with a 1/4-note delay with no Feedback but Ping-Pong on. I liked using the Shaper section to completely "round off" the front of the sound and lengthen and blur the sustain portion. The Stereo section in Comeback has a real-time pitch changer and I used it to further disguise the pad with this effect.
I saved that setup as a preset and put it on a melody backing vocal track in the same song and started to modify it greatly. I went with no Shaper and no Stereo pitching and changed the delay time to 1/16th notes and no feedback. I was looking for tone here so I went over to the Flavor section to dial in some Swirl--an analog phaser and also some Sauce--a cheesy-sounding reverb.
Finally, if you double-click the Comeback Kid logo, the delay section is bypassed leaving the Shaper, Stereo section's pitch changer/widener, and Flavor sections totally available! Awesome!
The Comeback Kid sells for $49 MSRP Download and runs on Mac & PC, VST, VST3, AU and AAX, 64-bit and 32-bit compatible DAWS. This is an awesome one stop effects plug-in you'll use all the time!
