Shown for the first time at the recent Indianapolis Summer NAMM Show, the DP-01FX/CD is the latest version of Tascam's eight-track digital Portastudio. With the addition of a built-in CD-RW drive, the whole idea/concept of a totally portable digital recording studio with mixer but without attendant computer and outboard interface boxes is consummate. Besides backing and archiving up your precious multi-track recordings to CD-ROM, the drive allows you to master and burn stereo music CDs of mixes made on the unit at the end of your session.
Just like the DP-01FX, this unit has eight tracks, two XLR mic inputs with phantom power, two 1/4-inch TRS jacks capable of either instrument or guitar levels (switchable), a pair of digital effects processors and the same, simple interface. You can record two tracks at a time and then mix all eight tracks using individual 45mm channel faders down to an additional stereo pair controlled by a stereo master fader. Each channel has a two-band parametric EQ, pan pot, plus an effect send knob to control two digital multi-effect processors during recording or a separate reverb processor later for a mix.
Like the DP-01FX, all recording is done to an internal 40GB hard drive at uncompressed CD-quality 16-bit/44.1kHz. The bright LCD display shows record levels; edit tasks including copy, paste, move, erase, and silence; and autolocator points. The unit has a S/PDIF digital output spigot, twin RCA analog output jacks, headphone jack, USB 2.0 I/O for moving files back and forth to a computer DAW system, and support for both MIDI clock and MIDI time code protocols.
The Tascam DP-01FX/CD sells for $799 MSRP and is a complete portable recording studio with everything you need to make great sounding eight-track recordings. You can capture your musical ideas quickly without setting up computers, interfaces, and outboard gear (and getting it all to work!) and later add, refine, mix it, and burn CDs.
